READY ... SET ... GO

By Bill DeWandeler

READY

  1. Pray. Ask God to stir hearts and to give you opportunities to tell people about Him. Our words are merely His tool—only He can change people.
  2. Personalize. Write out and memorize a three-minute summary of how you became a Christian, explaining:
    a. your life before Jesus
    b. how / why you saw your need for Jesus
    c. how your life has changed / is changing
  3. Plan. While God provides spontaneous opportunities for evangelism with friends and family, many people find it necessary to be intentional. Set time aside in your schedule to initiate conversations about Jesus with people you don't know.
  4. Practice. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the gospel: that God loves us, that our sin separates us from Him, that Jesus died to pay our penalty for that sin, and that we need to surrender to Him with repentant hearts.
SET
  • Contact NewLife Publishing at 1-800-235-7255 or go to www.nlpdirect.com (click on "Outreach Tools").
  • Download brief gospel presentations to your PDA [Personal Digital Assistant] from the Web at www.ccci-pda.com.
  • For hundreds of ideas and resources, go to the Evangelism Toolbox at www.evangelismtoolbox.com.
GO
  1. Service Projects: When you provide free car washes or other services (no tips accepted), you can talk with people while they wait, directing conversations toward God's love and how they can know Him personally. Move the conversation to a place where the person accepts their responsibility to respond to Jesus—yes or no.
  2. Invite people to your church, using business-card-sized invitations with your church's information (including service times and a simple map). Introduce yourself and ask them to come. Follow up with the question, "Do you attend a church regularly?"
  3. Go to places where people hang out: beaches, malls, parks, the cafeteria at your office, homes in your neighborhood.
  4. Ask good questions, like:
    a. "If God asked you today 'Why should I let you into My heaven?' what would you say?"
    b. "Based on your response, how confident are you that you would be allowed in, on a scale of 0 to 100 percent?"
    c. "Can I share with you what the Bible says about how you can know with 100-percent confidence that you can go to heaven?"
